Wood: the ideal ecological material
Wood as a material is certainly interesting for the environment. Its potential uses are just beginning to be tapped. The forest is indispensable for our ecosystem. Wood is renewable material. The production and transformation of wood has long-lasting positive effects: reduction in the use of fossil fuels, substitution for materials which consume much larger quantities of energy for their production.
By 2010, 12% of the consumption of primary energy must be from renewable sources (commitment of the members of the European Union in order to reduce their greenhouse effect gases).
Valorising of wastes and added value
When associated with other materials, wood adds its acoustic and thermal qualities, its fire resistance and lightness. These new materials with a high added value (composite materials such as wood plastic and wood concrete) open vast possibilities for added value.
Energy from wood
Wood is a competitive and clean fuel. There is an opportunity to valorise the part of the by-products which are not reinserted in the processes and to recover the discarded wood to create a stock of raw material: manufacture of slabs, granules or pellets. Note that the drier the manufactured products and the more complete their transformation: e.g. granules manufactured from compressed sawdust, the more efficient they are for the production of energy.
Figures: the use of 4m3 of wood energy saves 1 tonne of petroleum equivalent and prevents the emission of 2.5 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The Landes, a pioneering department in the use of wood for energy
The Landes department has been implementing a determined policy in favour of wood energy since 1986. Fourteen wood-burning heating plants equip various public installations. The departmental council has real expertise in the setting up of a wood-energy integrated chain.

EcoMateria is a dedicated site of 20 hectares on the Pontenx-les-Forges commune. It combines all the conditions indispensable to successfully develop environment integrated businesses:
- an accessible area far from housing areas,
- no sensitive areas nearby,
- pre-existing activity related to wastes,
- flat and well-drained land,
- a sandy soil offering an excellent bearing capacity for buildings,
- an environmental quality policy.
